`settings-saver.properties` at the top of the [store](https://xichil.dev/wiki/settings-saver/v0/guides/store-location/index.md) holds the settings
shared by every instance. It is not inside any game folder. Settings Saver creates it with the defaults
the first time it runs, and reads it at every launch: edit it with the games closed.

## Options

| Option | Default | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `backups` | `5` | How many [backups](https://xichil.dev/wiki/settings-saver/v0/guides/backups/index.md) of replaced `options.txt` files to keep, in total across all instances. `0` turns backups off. |
| `defaultProfile` | `default` | The profile used by instances whose [instance config](https://xichil.dev/wiki/settings-saver/v0/config/instance/index.md) doesn't name one. If the profile doesn't exist, those instances use `default`. |

A `backups` value that is not a whole number, or a `defaultProfile` name with `..`, `/` or `\` in
it, is replaced by its default with a warning in the game log. Unknown keys are ignored with a
warning.

## Example

```properties
# Settings Saver configuration (shared by all instances).
# Which profile an instance uses, and whether it syncs, is set per instance in <instance>/config/settings-saver.properties
# How many backups of overwritten instance files to keep
backups=10
# Profile used by instances that don't name one
defaultProfile=default
```
